A detention centre inmate who broke a youth's jaw in a fight over a missing PlayStation was locked up today.

Liban Ismail, 19, was convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm after a jury rejected his claim that he acted in self-defence.

He was handed 30 weeks behind bars.

During Ismail's trial, Maidstone Crown Court heard Sam Wallder, who was serving five years at Rochester Young Offenders' Institution, was attacked after he accused a group of having his games console.

Mr Wallder was said to have been punched, kicked and stamped on by three inmates.

A detention officer later said it looked as if Liban Ismail, 19, Naveed Rahman, also 19, and Motahar Sharif, 20, were "taking it in turns" to beat Mr Wallder.

However, it was as Mr Wallder was himself being restrained by prison officers that Ismail ran up and punched him to the side of his face, fracturing his jaw.

Ismail, of Edward Street, Deptford, Rahman, of Richmond Street, Plaistow, and Sharif, of no fixed address, all denied inflicting grievous bodily harm in May this year.

Both Rahman and Sharif were cleared by the jury.

Sentencing Ismail, Recorder Simon Crookenden QC said Mr Wallder was "clearly no danger" when Ismail punched him.

"There was a degree of provocation by Mr Wallder but it had really come to an end by the time you delivered the fateful blow."

Ismail, who has a previous conviction for violent disorder, will serve half his sentence less 110 days already spent on remand.
