Coach Graham Ford has played down speculation linking Kent with Worcestershire paceman Chris Whelan.

Reports emerged earlier in the week that Kent had made a 28-day approach to sign Whelan.

It comes a week after they confirmed their interest in Warwickshire seamer Naqaash Tahir and Leicestershire's England-qualified all-rounder James Allenby.

But Ford (pictured) said: "There has been quite a lot of excitement about what was only a few letters we have sent out.

"We still haven’t sat down and gone through our planning meetings to decide what direction we want to go next year."

Ford admitted having South African paceman Wayne Parnell back for a five-week stint will be "a big boost" but says he "would have loved" to have him for longer.

The 19-year-old left-armer, who impressed during his initial spell at the St Lawrence Ground, will be back from Friday, July 10 until Tuesday, August 4.

Ford said Kent were grateful to the South African Cricket Board for releasing him at all, saying: "They have been quite helpful. It looked for a while like we might not get him back at all."

He added: "Having him back will be a big boost. We would have loved to have him for longer but it certainly helps us to have him (at all)."
