Kent politicians condemn Trump supporters who stormed US Capitol

Kent politicians have condemned the shocking scenes of President Donald Trump supporters storming the US Capitol in Washington DC.

Amid violent clashes with police, protesters breached barricades and were able to enter the building on Capitol Hill today.

Mr Trump had previously urged his supporters to travel to Washington to protest over Congress’ formal approval of Joe Biden’s victory in the November presidential election.

Both chambers of Congress were forced into an abrupt recess by the protests as they were debating the Electoral College vote that gave Mr Biden the presidency.

Ashford MP Damian Green tweeted: "These are shocking and terrible scenes in Washington. Trump has behaved disgracefully."

MP for Tonbridge and Malling Tom Tugendhat, who is also chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, tweeted: "The US Republic has inspired millions. Not today.

"Today many will watch the screens fearful of the power of demagogues who claim to speak for the powerless but tear apart the laws that constrain the strong and protect the weak.
