Kent theatre company to perform in Beijing

A THEATRE company from Margate is to perform an unusual show in China in January. Members of Thanet Stage School will present Wonderful Broadway, a show they performed at Margate Winter Gardens in September.

They will be among the first Western artistes ever to perform such a show in the Communist country. Among the invited audience in Beijing will be Chinese dignitaries and ambassadors from across the world

The performance has been made possible thanks to principal member Carl Man and his father Tony. Mr Man is Chinese, and has organised the trip with business contacts.

Carl, 18, a student at Chatham House Grammar School, Ramsgate said: ”I hope it will amaze Chinese audiences, many of whom have never seen Broadway style shows.”

In October Carl flew to Brazil and sang at a concert in front of 3,000 people, before appearing on several Brazilian television shows. He also won a gold medal for Broadway singing in the 2000 World Championships for Performing Arts, held in Los Angeles.

The group fly to Beijing on December 30.

They will perform the show three times, and are also booked to appear in a promotional concert in a Beijing nightclub on New Year’s Eve.
