Love cheat footie star Wayne Rooney will be burned at the stake in Kent, we can reveal today.

Well, sort of...

Villagers in Edenbridge found out this morning it’s Manchester United’s moneybags footballer who’s been chosen for a ritual roasting.

The 30ft tall effigy took a week to make out of a steel frame, wire, hardboard and paper.

It will be torched on Guy Fawkes night at Lingfield Road's Recreation Ground, with fireworks starting at 8:30pm

Rooney has the subject of a tide of criticism recently.

He's been accused of cheating on his wife Coleen and had protests outside his home after he threatened to leave United - before doing a U-turn and signing a lucrative new contract.

Charles Laver, of the Edenbridge Bonfire Society, said: "It looks as if everyone wanted him burned.

"The vast majority of contestants in their competition to guess who the guy would be, voted for Rooney.

"He's got some big fireworks built inside him, so maybe it'll blow his head off or send his bag of money all over the field.

"There's no malice against him - we've got nothing against the guy, but we wouldn't mind his money."

The identity of this year’s guy was a closely-guarded secret until it was revealed at 10.30am.

Every year, on November 5, a 27ft effigy of a well-known figure goes up in flames on the village bonfire.

Last year it was glamour model Katie Price's turn to be set alight.

Previous celebrity guys have included the broadcasting duo Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand, former first lady Cherie Blair, and acerbic television presenter Anne Robinson.
