Man in court over fatal Birchington attack

A 46-year-old Birchington man has been remanded in custody charged with manslaughter following the death of a man from the village.

Mark Cable, of Stone Barn Avenue, was remanded at Margate Magistrates Court today.

He will appear again at Maidstone Crown Court on April 26.

A 52-year-old man, said locally to be grandfather Paul Howarth, was taken to the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate with serious head injuries on Friday night. He died on Sunday afternoon.

Floral tributes and messages have been laid by family and friends in Stone Barn Avenue. A postmortem examination will be held this week.

One tribute left at the scene said: "Dad and Grandad. I love you and miss you. But you will always be in our hearts."

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Stone Barn Avenue that night to come forward.
