A MAN attempted to rob a building society in Margate today. He walked into the Abbey National in the High Street and joined the queue.

When it was his turn, he went to the cashier and demanded £11,000 while brandishing some kind of weapon. The cashier refused and employed emergency security screens. The man then left the building.

A 39-year-old Ramsgate man was later being questioned in connection with the incident.
