A mum has been sent to prison for 90 days after she failed to stop her two children from truanting.

The woman, from Kemsley, who can not be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of knowing that her 12-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter weren’t attending school on a regular basis.

The woman received two 90-day prison sentences for the offences when she appeared before Sittingbourne Magistrates' Court.

She was also sentenced to 14-days behind bars for breaching a community order.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Kent county council brought the case to court.

A spokesman for KCC said: "In cases of irregular or non-attendance, parents are encouraged to work in partnership with the school and Kent county council.

"They are supported to resolve any issues which may be affecting their child.

"However, if this is not successful and results in sustained and persistent absence from school, Kent county council will, after considering all relevant facts, instigate legal action.

"Kent schools and Kent county council are committed to tackling absence. There is a proven link between attendance at school and learning."
