A 24-year-old mother-to-be accused of killing her young son will not stand trial until next summer because of fears over her pregnancy.

Kelly Tugwell had been due to have her case heard at Maidstone Crown Court last week, but a doctor said she was concerned as it was "a high risk pregnancy".

When the matter returned for review on Monday, the obstetrician said Tugwell needed regular hospital treatment. "I don't think she should be here," she added. The baby is due in mid-February.

Adjourning the trial until June 12, Mr Justice Bell said: "Serious though the allegation is, I don't think it would be right to take the risk involved at this time."

Tugwell, of Gorse Avenue, Weedswood, Chatham, denies the manslaughter of 19-month-old Robert Williams who died on August 1 last year. She also denies child cruelty.
