The vehicle overturned, and Rowan suffered serious head injuries. No other vehicle was involved.

He was taken to William Harvey hospital and later transferred to Kings College Hospital, where he died the following day.

His mother had minor injuries and she is keen to warn other drivers, particularly parents of the possible consequences of a lapse in concentration when driving.

The road was closed until 10pm while the serious crash investigation team (SCIU) examined the scene.

Officers are still appealing for witnesses to contact the SCIU on 01622 798538.
