Kent weather: Flood alert for River Medway in Tonbridge town centre and River Stour

Parts of a town centre are set to be submerged tonight as river levels rise.

Persistent rainfall has meant ground has saturated around the River Medway and flooding is expected for low-lying land and roads, with the warning in place from 7pm.

It is expected to impact Tonbridge playing fields and town centre car parks, as well as Tudeley and East Peckham.

This is likely to include the sports pitches, also known as the racecourse, in Tonbridge and low-lying roads and land in the Medway catchment, particularly around Tonbridge Sports Ground and Postern Lane.

Flooding is possible from Penshurst to Hampstead Lock at Yalding, including the Leigh Flood Storage area, the Ensfield Road, Tonbridge, Paddock Wood, the Hop Farm, East Peckham, Branbridges and Hale Street.

Flooding is also possible for the River Stour from the A2070 at Conningbrook Manor to Fordwich, including Wye, Godmersham, Shalmsford Street, Chartham, Canterbury and Sturry.

River levels are also rising at Wye, Horton and Fordwich on the Upper River Stour, and will continue to do so through the evening.
