A major search is under way on the Thanet coast after an elderly man went missing.

The man, who is in his mid-60s, was reported missing from his home in Abbot's Hill, Ramsgate, at 10pm last night, although it is believed he may have left home earlier in the day.

Police and coastguard teams have been searching the area since around midnight but have been unable to find him.

The missing man is around 5ft 7ins tall and has a slight build. He was wearing a brown jacket with a blue fleece underneath, brown shoes and blue jeans.

Thanet coastguard Pete Overton said: "We understand the man is taking medication which he doesn't have with him, so we're concerned he could be in some pain."

He added: "We've been looking for him all night but it's difficult to search for someone in the dark because there are so many places in which to hide or rest along the coastline."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Kent Police on 01843 231055.
