Five people are suspected to have died from salmonella poisoning, with hundreds more having become ill, after eating chicken products sold in major UK supermarkets.

The contaminated chicken was imported from Poland and turned into frozen nuggets and breaded chicken products, popular with children.

Children are among the around 480 people to have become ill due to consuming the chicken in the UK, with 44 per cent of victims aged 16 or under, according to the MailOnline.

Many of those have required hospital treatment for their symptoms.

The products in question - the SFC take home boneless bucket and chicken poppets as well as Vestey Food's Chick Inn 32 Jumbo Chicken Nuggets - are sold in several stores, including Morrisons, Sainsbury's and B&M. Similar products are also sold in Iceland, Lidl and Aldi.

Cases of salmonella associated with these products were reported throughout 2020, with cases still being reported.

Due to long shelf life of the products, with best before dates of late 2021 and early 2022, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has re-issued a warning.

A statement from the FSA said: "We are recalling specific batches of these products due to salmonella being found.

"Customers are advised not to eat this product and return to the nearest store where a full refund will be given."

The products being recalled are:

• SFC Take Home Boneless Bucket, Pack size: 650g, Batch code: L19720, Best-before date: 28 November 2021
• Chick Inn 32 Jumbo Chicken Nuggets, Pack size: 650g, Batch code: 31453058. Best-before date: January 2022
