A rapist who subjected a young woman to a horrifying two-hour ordeal 23 years ago has finally been caged today.

James Robertson was brought to justice when cold case detectives matched DNA evidence taken at the time to him.

The 58-year-old, from Lancashire, denied raping the 20-year-old in Canterbury on August 20, 1988.

But a jury of seven men and five women took five-and-a-half hours to find him guilty.

Detective Inspector David Withers said: "The young woman went through a terrible ordeal 22 years ago.

"Supported by her family, she has bravely re-lived that ordeal by giving evidence before a jury over two days.

"We have worked closely with the Forensic Science Service and the Crown Prosecution Service to ensure that this man was brought before the courts to face the consequences of his actions."
