A2, M2, A20 and M20 roadworks and closures in September and the diversion routes

Bridge repairs and road resurfacing works are taking place on several major roads across the county.

If you're planning on a late night back from Canterbury or a quick trip to Lakeside over the next few weeks you'll need to bear these in mind or risk long diversions home.

A2 between Brenley Corner and Canterbury

Roadworks on the A2 between Brenley Corner and Canterbury are under way.

The repair work will carry on for six consecutive weekends and drivers will have to take a 40-mile diversion along the A299 Thanet Way to the Sevenscore roundabout near Cliffsend and down the A256 towards Dover, and vice versa.

Motorists looking to get to Canterbury from Brenley Corner will likely cut along the A290 at Blean.

These works will be followed by four weekend closures on the six-mile stretch between Brenley Corner and the Wincheap Interchange.

M2 between Sittingbourne and Faversham

Night-time closures on the M2 will be in place for a month with the works demanding a mega 70-mile diversion route.

The resurfacing of the coastbound stretch between junction 5 for Sittingbourne and junction 6 for Faversham starts on Tuesday.

Closures will be in place on Monday to Thursday nights until September 30 from 8pm to 6am.

But the road will be open as usual on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights during this period.

National Highways, previously known as Highways England, has told drivers the main diversion route will be the A249, M20 and A2 via Ashford, Dover and Folkestone and back to Brenley Corner to rejoin the M2 at junction 7.

A statement from the roads agency said: "Please be aware that these works are subject to change due to weather conditions."

A2 Bean/Ebbsfleet

Overnight closures will be in force for the last two weeks of September and entering early October for ongoing £112m upgrades to the Bean and Ebbsfleet junctions on the A2.

From Monday, September 20 to Friday, September 24 closures will be in place on the A2 coastbound carriageway between the exit and entry slip roads at Bean, A2 London-bound entry slip road at Bean, two-way traffic lights on A296 at Bean, A2 London-bound exit slip road at Ebbsfleet and A2260 northbound at Ebbsfleet.

On Saturday, September 25 the following roads will be shut: A2260 at Ebbsfleet southbound and the A2 coastbound entry slip road at Ebbsfleet.

The following week various closures will take effect.

  • Monday, September 27 – Two way traffic lights on A296 at Bean, A2 London-bound entry slip road at Ebbsfleet and A2 Coastbound exit slip road at Ebbsfleet;
  • Tuesday 28 September – Two way traffic lights on A296 at Bean, A2 London-bound entry slip road at Ebbsfleet and A2 Coastbound exit slip road at Ebbsfleet;
  • Wednesday 29 September – A2 London-bound entry slip road at Ebbsfleet and A2 Coastbound exit slip road at Ebbsfleet;
  • Thursday 30 September – A2 London-bound entry slip road at Ebbsfleet and A2 Coastbound exit and entry slip roads at Ebbsfleet;
  • Friday 1 October – A2 London-bound entry slip road at Ebbsfleet and A2 Coastbound exit and entry slip roads at Ebbsfleet;
  • Saturday 2 October – A2 Coastbound entry slip road at Ebbsfleet

All closures will be in force from 9.30pm to 6am the following morning with signed diversion routes.

A20 Stanford Interchange

Work on the A20 Stanford Intersection roundabout over the M20 motorway will be carried out on four consecutive Saturday nights.

The road at junction 11 will be closed from 9pm this Saturday until 5am Sunday. This is for resurfacing works carried out by Kent County Council.

This includes the slip roads for London-bound and coastbound traffic so there is no access to the roundabout from any direction.

For access to and from Canterbury and Stone Street via A260 Canterbury Road, Spitfire Way, Canterbury Road, The Street (Denton), Canterbury Road, Old Dover Road (Box Iron Road in opposite direction), A2 Dover Road, A2050 Dover Road, New Dover Road, B2068 St Lawrence Road, Old Dover Road, Nackington Road, Faussett Hill, Street End, Stone Street and Stanford Bypass, and vice versa.

For access between Newingreen and Folkestone via A20 Ashford Road, A261 Hythe Road, London Road, A259 Military Road (Dymchurch Road and Scanlons Bridge in opposite direction), Red Lion Square, Rampart Road, Prospect Rd, East Street, Seabrook Road, Sandgate Esplanade, Sandgate High Street, Sandgate Hill, Sandgate Road, Earls Avenue, Shorncliffe Road, Castle Hill Avenue, B2064 Cheriton Road, A2034 Cherry Garden Avenue and A259 Churchill Avenue, and vice versa.

Residual traffic leaving the services will be directed onto the M20 London-bound.

M20 Junction 3 for the M26 to Junction 1 for the M25

The London-bound carriageway will be closed on Saturday from 8pm until 8am Sunday to carry out bridge works on Fawkham Road.

It will be closed again from September 6 for seven nights from 10pm to 5am.

A clearly signed diversion sign will be in place via the M26 London-bound to junction 2a and the A20 London Road, Main Road Gorse Hill northbound, where it re-joins the M20 at junction 1 Swanley.

From September 6 the flyover at the top of Blue Bell Hill will be closed for bridge maintenance.

The work is above the M2 near junction three and the A229 carriageway will be closed.

From Monday, September 6 until September 13 the Maidstone-bound carriageway will be closed each evening from 8pm to 6am. Lane two on the Chatham-bound carriageway will also be closed

On Tuesday, September 14 to Wednesday September 22 the northbound carriageway will be closed from 8pm to 6am each day. Lane two on the Maidstone-bound carriageway will also be closed

National Highways engineers will briefly return to the Maidstone-bound carriageway on September 27 and the Chatham-bound carriageway on September 28.

Diversions are in place during these works via Lord Lees roundabout, the A229 and A2045 and re-joining at the Rochester Road roundabout. The Maidstone-bound diversion is the same in the opposite direction. This route is just over a mile-and-a-half and will be clearly labelled along with yellow signs in advance of the works informing of the upcoming closure.

Dartford Crossing

The west tunnel and junction 1a heading to Essex will be closed overnight on September 6 to September 10. A clearly signed diversion will be in place. Please allow extra time for your journey.

Medway Tunnel

Work on the new slip road on Anthony's Way roundabout which meets the A289 and Medway Tunnel has begun and will continue until February.

A speed limit of 30 mph

The speed limit on Berwick Way from the junction of A228 to Gillingham Gate Roundabout will be reduced for highway improvement works. During the duration of the work, Berwick Way and Medway Tunnel will be closed during the night.

Other roadworks this month

A225 Hawley Road: Road closure on September 5 for one night from 8pm to 5.30am near Royal Road for National Highways works.

Dymchurch Road: Closed overnight from September 6 to 15 to allow for resurfacing works by Kent Highways.

Tenterden, Ashford Road: Closed from September 6 for up to five nights to allow for resurfacing works by Kent Highways.

Goudhurst, Spelmonden Road and Clay Hill: Closed overnight from September 6 to 14 to allow for resurfacing works.

Herne, A291 Herne Street: Road closed from September 7 for three nights from 8pm to 5am from the roundabout with School Lane (including the roundabout) to Park Place. This is to allow for resurfacing works.

Frittenden, Cranbrook Road and Frittenden Road: Closed from September 7 for two days between 9.30am and 3.30pm to allow for carriageway patching works by Kent highways.
