Three teenage yobs caught covering a street with rubbish have been fined and made to clean up their mess.

The trio were spotted on CCTV in Chatham emptying refuse bags and metal bins left out for collection.

Police said they were then seen scattering food waste and trash across Chatham High Street on April 2.

Minutes later a patrol caught up with them around Newnham Street and marched them back to the high street.

Officers gave them gloves, shovels and brooms to clear up the mess they created. The three were also issued with £50 fines for disorder.

A Kent Police spokesman said the teenagers, two aged 18 and one 19, had caused "large-scale damage".

PC David Hill added: "The officers who attended the incident felt that it was necessary to issue the men with a penalty notice but also believed that they should be responsible for clearing up the mess they had caused.

"A number of members of the public saw the teenagers cleaning up and commented they were pleased with the action taken by the officers and hoped that it would encourage the teenagers to be more considerate in future."
