Art thieves have swiped two valuable paintings in broad daylight from a gallery in Rochester, it was revealed today.

Police in Medway said the artworks worth almost £1,000 each were stolen from the Francis Iles art gallery on August 17.

The raid took place at about 1pm when a man was seen leaving the shop with the paintings and was confronted by a member of staff.

The thief then fled the scene.

He was 5ft 8in tall, medium build, 55 to 60 years old with long grey hair tied back in a ponytail.

The suspect was wearing a black trilby-style hat and a black three quarter length leather jacket.

He was also wearing a white T-shirt, black trousers and black shoes.

The two paintings were of steam trains and would appeal to railway enthusiasts. One was valued at £900 and the other at £950.

DC Amanda Neimer said: "The paintings belonged to the artist, who is obviously very keen to get them back into her possession.

"It was a busy time of the day in Rochester so we believe someone must have seen this man leaving the shop after the paintings were stolen.

"We would like to hear from anyone who saw a man matching the description as we would like to speak to them about the incident."
