Five families are homeless after a massive fire in a block of
flats last night.

The blaze broke out in the front room of a flat in Allhallows
and quickly destroyed the home and other parts of the building.

Firefighters from across Medway went to Jutland Close at
about 10pm and found the building well alight.

The fire broke out in the living room as the people who
lived there were watching a movie in a bedroom.

When firefighters arrived the occupants, two adults and two
teenage children, had managed to get out of the building but were
suffering from smoke inhalation.

It is not believed the family needed hospital treatment and were
given first aid by paramedics.

Crews from Strood, Medway, Cliffe, Hoo and
Thames-side were sent to tackle the blaze whic destroyed the flat
and the roof of the building.

Other flats in the building have been damaged by
smoke.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The fire
was well alight when we arrived.

“We evacuated the whole building there are six flats, but one
was unoccupied.

“The fire broke out in the living room and we think it may have
been an electrical fault with an overloaded plug socket.

“The windows were blown out and the roof has been destroyed, we
spent about four hours at scene putting out the flames.

“The other flats have also been effected by smoke and water
damage and probably can’t be lived in.

“We would remind people not to overload power sockets and leave
electrical appliances unattended.”
