Villagers hope CCTV will curb vandals

SECURITY cameras costing more than £35,000 may be installed in Wrotham in a bid to tackle vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Plans have been drawn up by the parish council to install eight cameras in strategic positions to help combat the problems which cost an estimated £5,000 to £10,000 each year to repair.

Parish council chairman Lesley Brown said: "There have been problems here for as long as I can remember but it just seems to have got worse over the last few years. The trouble-makers seem to hang out in all weathers. It's all year round now, we're finding, and there have been a lot of problems recently."

An application for funding up to one third of the project has been sent to Tonbridge and Malling council and a decision is expected in early January.

The parish council also intends to approach local businesses to help finance the cost of the project and will make up any shortfall from its own reserves. Cllr Brown said: "Obviously we are unable to fund something of this immense cost on our own, so we're hoping that Tonbridge and Malling council will be able to help us make it happen."
