Chatham Town’s dreams of a place in the FA Cup First Round for the first time in more than 80 years were dashed by a 2-0 defeat to St Albans City at Maidstone Road on Saturday afternoon.

However Dover Athletic will be in the hat for the draw – to be held at 1.35pm on Sunday – after they cruised to a 3-0 win over Oxford City with Welling United joining them after a 1-0 success at Bristol side Brislington.

Dartford and Ebbsfleet United face a replay on Tuesday night after playing out a 1-1 draw infront of nearly 3,000 fans at Stonebridge Road on Saturday.

More than 800 fans flocked to Maidstone Road to see if Chatham could continue their historic run, and the hosts saw appeals for an early penalty waved away after Lee Hales went down in the area and Alfie May just couldn’t stretch to turn in a cross from McCann.

Nwokeji fired wide at the other end but in the final minute of the first-half City dangerman John Frendo put the visitors ahead with his 15th of the season from a David Keenleyside cross.

The tie was all-but won within two minutes of the start of the second half when Keenleyside made it 2-0, ramming in the rebound after Nwokeji had headed a corner against the bar.

Frendo went close to a third before a cross-shot from Kalvin Morath-Gibbs clipped the top of the bar while Chats saw another effort crash against the underside of the bar before being scrambled away.

Morath-Gibbs was denied by the Saints keeper late-on but despite Chatham battling bravely, the Southern League Premier Division promotion-chasers who went through.

Whites cruised past Skrill North rivals Oxford City at Crabble.

Nathan Elder headed over the stranded City keeper on 24 minutes, with a defender helping the ball into the net to put Athletic ahead, while Barry Cogan – who played in a Cup Final for Millwall – curled a free-kick into the net eight minutes before half-time.

The third arrived from the heel of Sean Raggett amid a goalmouth scramble following a Cogan free-kick 16 minutes from time as Whites fans were able to dream of a repeat pairing with Gillingham, whom they beat in the First Round in 2010 on their way to the Third Round.

Lee Clarke's goal 22 minutes from time was enough to secure the Wings' place in the hat for Sunday's draw after a tight game at Brislington.
