Southern Counties East clubs to be contacted about playing a cup competition following the scrapping of their league season

Clubs in the Southern Counties East Football League are to be asked about their willingness to take part in a cup competition.

Leagues at steps three to six were declared null and void last week, subject to FA Council approval, but the SCEFL are keen to explore a way of seeing competitive football played before the end of May.

Football can commence from March 29 but it’s unlikely any action will be played unless fans at non-elite levels can return, which is currently being discussed with the government and the FA.

Many clubs will need supporters to finance a return to action through gate receipts and additional matchday income, although outside catering is not permitted until April 12. The FA have extended the 2020/21 season dates for grassroots leagues to complete their campaigns by the end of June but any competition played at step five level (SCEFL) would need to be completed by May 31.

It’s a small window but with no games played at that level since the end of October there could be an appetite to see some football played.

A SCEFL statement said: “The league will be contacting all member clubs in the next few days to discuss the potential of a cup competition to be played once football is allowed to return in the final month or so of the season.

“We will be sending out a survey in the next few days to understand what interest and appetite there is for this, as it may give clubs the opportunity to start earning revenues again and for players the long-awaited chance to return to action.

“Such a competition would be voluntary for clubs and the board will provide a further update once more details are known.”

The usual league cup competition has not been played in the Southern Counties East league this season to ease pressure on the fixture list.

SCEFL members Deal Town are expected to resume football as they remain in the FA Vase and that competition, which is classed as elite, is to be restarted.

The Isthmian League - steps three and four - have said they have no plans for any cup football to be played.
