Gills skipper collects glittering prizes

GILLINGHAM captain Paul Smith swept the board of honours at the weekend Player of the Year awards ceremonies.

The midfielder created history by becoming the first player to win the Gills Independent Supporters' Club accolade three times following his successes last season and in 1998. Chris Hope was runner-up and Marlon King third.

Smith also collected the Supporters' Club Away Player award while Harry Cackett won the Supporter of the Year trophy.

Later on Saturday night Smith received Gillingham Football Club's award from former England boss and Manchester City manager Kevin Keegan. Hope was again runner-up with Paul Shaw third. Nyron Nosworthy won the Young Player of the Year award.

Smith said: "I feel very honoured because it's the supporters who vote for you and I cannot thank them enough. This is a fantastic way to round off a season."
