Gills manager Martin Allen knew Adebayo Akinfenwa was the right man for the club when the pair sat down for talks.
He said: “He’s a good bloke who loves it at Gillingham. He could have gone to another club on a two-year contract.
“He could have gone to another club and earned more money but he wanted to come to Gillingham and sign here for one year.
“I didn’t need to know any more after he told me that. I know what he can do, I know what he’s like. I’m now getting to know him better as a person off the field and he’s going to do good for our club.”
Gills are thought to be in the market for another striker, with Cody McDonald rumoured to be on Allen’s radar but Deon Burton’s future remains uncertain.
The Gills manager confirmed: “I’m not in the position to be able to offer him anything at the moment.”
Allen changed his plans for Saturday’s win at Bromley.
The team who started the match were due to play for an hour but the summer heat at Hayes Lane forced his hand.
He said: “It was difficult to play (in that heat) with the temperature but the pitch was in good condition.
“All our players have come through with no injuries. We changed it to 45 minutes a player because of the heat and it was a fantastic workout.”
