New boys humble once mighty Leeds

GILLINGHAM hung on for a precious three points as Darren Byfield and Iwan Roberts capped home debuts with a goal apiece.

The first ever league meeting between the two sides saw a host of chances at both ends throughout the match with Gills making the most of a cracking first half display to wrap up a 2-1 win.

A fantastic display from the home side gave the visiting Yorkshire side a shock after just six minutes when Byfield drove a long range effort past Neil Sullivan following a deflection off Jermaine Wright.

Byfield nearly doubled the lead with a lobbed effort which clipped the top of the bar before Roberts marked his first home appearance with a goal.

Patrick Agyemang was instrumental in the goal as he threaded a ball through the defense for Roberts to stroke home under the keeper to send a massive home crowd delirious.

The second half saw plenty more action with Leeds pulling a goal back ten minutes from the end as Danny Pugh fired past Steve Banks.

Gills had their own chances towards the end of the match but eventually kept Leeds at bay to earn a deserved victory.
