Place in the sun for golfer Craig

BROTHERLY love temporarily went out of the window when golfers Craig and Ryan Hughes played each other in the final of the Kent Messenger Group Sunshine Challenge.

The brothers, both members of Deangate Ridge course, near Strood, play each other most Saturday mornings but their meeting at Chart Hills, near Ashford, was a little special.

At stake for the winner was an all-expenses week's holiday in the Algarve in November to represent the Kent Messenger Group in the national finals of the matchplay competition for regional newspapers.

It was five-handicapper Craig, 27, who took the honours edging out 18-year-old Craig, 11 handicap, 2&1 in an exciting final.

Craig, who lost in the final four years ago, said: "It was a little bit strange playing Ryan with so much at stake but it was a great game. It was a shame there had to be a loser."

Father Martin, who is also a member at Deangate Ridge, said: "They are both fine golfers and I felt so proud."

Ryan didn't leave empty handed. He was presented with a £200 voucher to help towards the cost of November's trip.
