VERSATILE defender Matt Lee has become Welling United’s latest summer signing.

The 25-year-old former Charlton YTS player signed a one-year contract after making the switch from fellow Nationwide Conference club Gravesend.

Wings boss Paul Parker said: “Matt is a versatile defender who can play anywhere across the back four but is a fine full-back.”

Parker has also raided his former club Chelmsford for young midfielder Gareth Street. The 18-year-old came through the youth system at the Essex club, before breaking into the first team last season. He joins on a non-contract basis.

Parker added: “Gareth reminds me a bit of a young Mike Rutherford. He gets stuck in and works extremely hard in the middle of the park. He is maturing quickly and is getting stronger, especially when he played the back end of last season with Chelmsford on a regular basis.”

Street is the second promising youngster to move to Park View Road during the summer from Chelmsford, following the arrival of striker George Lay earlier in the month.

Parker has also added Dover trio Jamie Day, Lee Spiller and Andy Arnott to his squad as his prepares for life in the new Conference South division.
