Previously home to a church and then an inn, today The George Vaults is a contemporary brasserie wine bar with a rich and lengthy history. But some things remain the same. The original 14th century vaulted Crypt - situated downstairs in the beautiful four-floor building - is still there and can be hired out as an atmospheric setting for private functions and events such as weddings. The George Vaults is licensed for civil ceremonies and civil partnerships and can cater for up to 70 guests. Closed for almost a year during restoration, the Crypt owes its origin to a chamberlain of the priory during the time of Bishop Gundulph. Guests can enjoy their drinks in the contemporary elegance of the main bar or catch up with friends in the cosy lounge bar.
The restaurant is situated on the first floor and is the perfect setting after a delicious meal. The talented chef brings together the best season produce in a menu of mouth-watering and beautifully presented dishes that are a treat to the senses. For those seeking something a little different, there are also scrumptious specials made with the latest seasonal produce. There’s a lengthy wine list to accompany the food, as well as separate menus for functions, buffets and children. The George Vaults also serves a scrumptious breakfast from Monday to Friday, and an excellent Sunday lunch.
For a livelier evening, The George Vaults also boasts the Affinity Bar - a cocktail bar spread across two floors, with a dance floor on the lower level. Those who enjoy live shows and entertainment can see a range of events at the venue from live music to open mic nights to live comedy. Guests can sample the latest elegant concoctions or book a private section for a special occasion. This versatile venue even has an enchanting courtyard which was recently refurbished and which is perfect for a long lunch in the sun.
