Man arrested on suspicion of assault on a police dog after van followed from Cambridge Crescent, near Maidstone

A driver has been arrested for allegedly attacking a police dog.

Police were following a van which was driven away from officers in Cambridge Crescent, in Shepway, near Maidstone, before being abandoned.

The force sent a dog unit as part of the search, which happened around 5.30am this morning.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and driving without the correct licence.

A police spokesman added: "He was further arrested for assaulting a police dog and causing damage to a police vehicle."

The police dog is not believed to have suffered any serious injuries.

The man remains in custody pending further enquiries.
