A man has been arrested after plain clothes police officers found suspected live ammunition and bullets during a search of a car.

At around 10.30pm on Wednesday officers were patrolling the Londonbound carriageway of the M20 when they spotted a suspicious Volkswagen Golf.

The car was brought to a stop at a location close to Junction 7 in Maidstone before it was then searched by officers.

Items believed to be a firearms magazine and bullets were discovered inside. Cannabis was also seized.

A 43-year-old man from Sheerness was arrested on suspicion of possession of firearms and possession of drugs.

He has since been released pending further investigation.
