Premises of former Beluga Bar in Maidstone becomes available

A popular nightspot which closed could get a new lease of life.

The former Beluga Bar, in Bank Street, Maidstone, which shut last year, has been advertised with a new lease and is looking for someone willing to pay a rent of £110,000 a year for the three-storey building.

Tunbridge Wells-based Cradick Retail, agent for the building, describes it as a “fully fitted” nightclub which has a premises licence allowing alcohol to be served between 10pm and 5am.

Beluga was one of the jewels in Maidstone’s clubbing crown, with many coming from afar to sample its nightlife. But the party was over and it closed in 2015.

It previously hosted nights with celebrities, including former Radio 1Xtra DJ Tim Westwood, singer Ms Dynamite and reality TV star Joey Essex.

Beluga previously hit the headlines when it left revellers disappointed after they paid £100 for a night that was to scheduled to have included an appearance from rap royalty Snoop Dogg in 2012 – but the superstar failed to show up.

The previous managers of the nightclub also had to address Maidstone council’s licensing committee about overcrowding after one night saw 400 more people admitted than was allowed under the terms of the licence.

The closure of Beluga was followed by a decline in Maidstone’s nightlife, as nearby Banks Bar, which boasted the town’s largest patio garden, stopped serving shortly afterwards and closed last January.

Wonderland, in Lockmeadow, later shut up shop in July, marking the end of an era for the Barker Road spot – which had previously been clubs Ikon, and Liquid and Envy. The building has since undergone a huge revamp and reopened as Gravity Trampoline Park.

The former Beluga bar, which has a capacity of 1,150, is advertised as being in the heart of the town centre, and the building offers a new operator a ground, basement and first floor.
