Repair works are set to last two weeks after a car crashed into a historic bridge in Maidstone town centre.

The structure over the River Medway in the centre of town was struck on Saturday morning.

No one was injured but the bridge, which has been in place since the 14th century but rebuilt in its current form in 1879, has been damaged.

Repairs are due to start this Friday.

A Kent County Council (KCC) spokesman confirmed the damaged section will be removed and scaffolding will be erected to allow the parapet above the river to be reconstructed.

One lane of The Broadway - one of the town's busiest roads - will be closed to traffic to allow pedestrians to walk around the fenced off area.

Part of the work will be done overnight and the repairs will take approximately two weeks.

The bridge was assessed by KCC on Saturday.

A spokesman for Kent Police said the force was called at 11.30am following the crash, which did not involve any other vehicles. Kent Fire and Rescue Service also attended and the scene was left in the hands of Kent Highways to make safe.

It is not known how much the repairs will cost.
