Mote Road, Maidstone closed near junction with Lower Stone Street while South East Water repairs water main

A major town centre route could stay closed for emergency repairs for another two days

Mote Road in Maidstone is currently shut on the approach to the town centre due to a burst water main.

The road is cordoned off just past the junction with Melville Road, near the town’s mosque and close to the junction with Lower Stone Street.

The closure is causing lengthy queues for drivers who are being sent down Romney Place, past Sainsbury’s.

Kent County Council says signed diversions are in place and motorists should expect delays.

Issues first arose on Saturday when the roads were coned off and South East Water officers were spotted at the scene.

Fencing and barriers have since been placed around what appears to be a dug-up hole around the water main while works are underway.

The closure is expected to be in place until Wednesday (January 15).

Distribution manager for the utility company Jack Vaughan said: “We are sorry to our customers in Maidstone whose supplies were interrupted on Saturday afternoon (January 11) following a burst water main on Mote Road.

“We were able to re-direct water across our network to restore supplies to around 150 affected customers within an hour, but we are sorry to all those impacted by a loss of pressure or had no water for a short period.

“To carry out repair work, a road closure was required on Mote Road, and we apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

“We have now completed the repair to the main following the burst, and we are working towards having the road returned to a safe and driveable condition by Wednesday, January 15.

“We understand traffic disruptions can be very frustrating, and we would like to thank the residents of Maidstone for their patience and understanding.”
