New waste recycling centre destined for 20/20 Business Park in Allington

The second waste recycling centre promised for Maidstone may actually not be in the borough after all, but rather just across the border in Tonbridge and Malling.

Two weeks ago, KCC leader Cllr Paul Carter promised a new household waste transfer station would open in Allington within the next 15 months.

Since then KCC has resolutely declined to say exactly where the new "tip" would be located. A spokesman said the project was in its infancy and the county was evaluating a number of possible options.

Cllr Dan Daley, however, the Lib Dem representative for the Maidstone Central Division, which includes Allington, said he believed the site would be on the 20/20 Business Park, off St Laurence Avenue.

The suggestion makes sense because Cllr Carter's promise arose after Cllr Nicholas Heslop, leader of Tonbridge and Malling Council, expressed concerns for his residents when the Medway Unitary Authority recently announced it would ban non-Medway residents from its tips. At present a large number of Malling residents use Medway's Cuxton waste station because there is no tip in Tonbridge and Malling itself.

Maidstone's only household waste recycling station is at Burial Ground Lane in Tovil.

Medway has since announced a reprieve and will continue to allow Kent residents to use Cuxton - but only for 18 months.

Cllr Daley said he thought the 20/20 park would be a good location.

He said: "It has good access and it's well away from any housing. It's a much better location than Tovil, where at peak times whenever a queue forms for the waste station it clogs up all the local estate roads."

It would also be very close to the Allington incinerator, which is used to destroy non-recyclable waste.

Cllr Daley said he would wait to see the detailed proposals but he felt "cautiously optimistic."

He said: "Another waste station on this side of Maidstone would certainly bring some relief to Tovil."
