The silver Toyota Prius crashed into a bedroom in the bungalow causing damage to the property and leaving a large hole in the external wall.

The car was still embedded in the wall this morning, crushed at the front and surrounded by a pile of bricks to the side and on the bonnet.

The passenger-side door is now unable to close and some of the windows are smashed.

Faint tyre marks can be seen in the grass.

Fire crews used cutters to free the driver.

He was assessed by ambulance staff. He was not seriously injured but was taken to Maidstone Hospital for further checks.

No one inside the home was injured.

Kent Police confirmed the driver wasn't arrested. A neighbour, Patrick Earl, 80, was stood in his doorway talking to gas employees when the incident happened two doors down from him.

He said: "I was standing talking to them but didn't see anything and just heard a crash.

"They looked round and said 'Oh my god' and disappeared. I looked out and saw what was going on and then I rang the police.

"It isn't something you expect to happen around here. I've lived here 18 years and I've always thought if it was going to be anywhere, it would be the house on the corner so it was a bit unusual."

Mr Earl said the gas staff spoke to the man in the car to check if he was ok while emergency services were on their way.

The home owners are dealing with the matter privately with their insurer and the police will remove the vehicle today.
