Pupils sent home from St Augustine Academy in Maidstone due to fire alarm ringing 'constantly'

A "constantly" ringing fire alarm has forced pupils to be sent home from a Maidstone school.

St Augustine Academy in Oakwood Road made a decision to close the school in the interest of "pupil safety" earlier today.

School leaders have not revealed further details but said the issue was "in hand" and expect students to be able to return as usual tomorrow.

An email from acting principal Sandra Dean to parents, seen by KentOnline, read: "I am sorry to inform you that we have taken the decision to close the school at lunchtime today due to the fire alarm sounding constantly.

"Students will be allowed to contact home for permission to leave early.

"Any students unable to get home will remain in school with senior members of staff.

"We anticipate things returning to normal for tomorrow but please check the school website for further updates."

The school confirmed the email had been sent to parents but said it would not be providing any further comment on the matter.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said it had not been called to the school.
