Delays on M20 between Maidstone and Ashford

A crash between a car and a lorry closed the M20 on the coastbound carriageway between Junction 8 for Maidstone and Junction 9 for Ashford.

Traffic on the carriageway was stopped while fire services had to cut the driver of the car out of their vehicle.

The driver, a woman reportedly in her 40's, has been taken to hospital and the two vehicles have been removed by Highways England.

There was a queue of traffic at least two and a half miles long stuck on the motorway, which was closed at the Maidstone exit, with a diversion in palce via the A20.

The clean-up operation is now finished and restrictions on the roads have been lifted, with delays on both the motorway and A20 expected to gradually ease.

A KFRS spokeswoman said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene of a road traffic collision between Junction 8 and Junction 9 of the M20 at 10:22am on 9 October.

"Two fire engines were sent to the scene and crews used hydraulic rescue equipment to release a trapped casualty from one of the vehicles, who was then passed into the care of South East Coast Ambulance paramedics."

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at around 10am on Wednesday 9 October regarding a collision involving a car and a lorry on the coastbound carriageway of the M20 between junctions 8 and 9.

"Officers, Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended the scene where a woman was treated for injuries. She was taken to a local hospital for further medical attention.

"Highways officers also attended and the coastbound carriageway was closed at junction 8 while emergency services dealt with the incident."
