An elderly couple had to be rescued by fire crews after their car overturned on the A249 this afternoon.

The crash occurred on the northbound carriageway of the road near the Detling Aerodrome.

Traffic is queuing back to junction 7 of the M20 and drivers are advised to use an alternative route where possible.

Highways England has issued a warning to drivers to take care when driving in the heavy rain this afternoon.

This comes as emergency services remain at a crash on the A20, which is expected to keep the road closed for several hours.

A Kent Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called at 12.13pm on Tuesday, November 20 to reports a car had overturned on the Sittingbourne bound carriageway of the A249 Detling Hill.

"Officers, the South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service all attended and road closures were put in place.

"The two occupants of the car were trapped in the vehicle, but were subsequently safely removed shortly after 1pm.

"They were taken by land ambulance to hospital and are not believed to have suffered any serious injuries.

"The Sittingbourne carriageway currently remains closed whilst recovery of the vehicle is underway."

A Kent Fire and Rescue spokesperson added: "Emergency services were called to a crash involving an overturned car on the Sheppey-bound carriageway of A249 at Detling.

"Crews helped to release an elderly man and an elderly woman from the vehicle. They were passed in the care of SECAmb."
