Drivers could face queues coming in and out of a town centre while work on a busy road is underway.
There are temporary traffic lights on London Road near the Coldharbour Roundabout in Maidstone.
The measures are to make way for “essential works” being carried out by The Electricity Network Company Limited.
They consist of a trench excavation so cables can be installed to power a nearby housing development.
Temporary lights were placed between Beaver Road and St Laurence Avenue junctions on Monday (January 6) morning.
They are scheduled to remain in place until January 17 although the utility company is anticipating an earlier completion date.
A spokesperson for The Electricity Network Company Limited said: “We have manually controlled 2-way lights on London Road which are in close proximity to existing three-way light setup.”
“We will endeavour to minimise disruption to the public whilst we complete these essential works.”
Kent Highways has warned motorists to expect delays.
One driver said: “It was horrendous this afternoon, 20 mins to go 500 yards.”
Another added: “Roadworks on Tonbridge Road too so as usual nightmare trying to get in and out of Maidstone.”
Repairs are being carried out by Southern Water on the A26 and are scheduled to finish at 5pm on Friday (January 10).
