Drivers delayed after car fire on Chatham-bound A229 Blue Bell Hill

Drivers faced delays after a car caught alight on a major route.

Flames could be seen engulfing the vehicle, at around 2.30pm, on the Chatham-bound carriageway of the A229, Blue Bell Hill, between Maidstone and Chatham.

Witnesses saw at least one fire engine and police in attendance.

As of 4pm traffic, which was previously backed up to Junction 6 for the M20 at Maidstone, had begun to clear, with one lane reopened.

It’s unknown if anyone was hurt.

A police spokesperson added: “We were called at 2.38pm to reports of a vehicle fire on the A229, Blue Bell Hill.

“Officers are currently at the scene assisting with traffic management, and two lanes of the carriageway remain closed.”

The fire service has been contacted for comment.
