Kent duo Dennis Potter and Sue Plummer set sights on festive number one spot with Santa's Grate Christmas

A musical duo from Kent are looking to join the likes of Slade, Mariah Carey and The Pogues in Christmas folklore after creating their own seasonal track - and they've set their sights on it reaching number one in the charts.

Singer/songwriter Dennis Potter, 58, from Rochester and lyricist Sue Plummer, 60, from Maidstone, have teamed up to create Santa's Grate Christmas, which they hope will become a new festive classic.

The pair have produced nine other tracks together since they first joined forces a year ago to make a single commemorating the centenary of the bombing of the HMS Pembroke Drill Shed in Chatham.

Dr Plummer, who lives in Allington, and worked as a nurse before becoming campus director for Canterbury Christ Church University's Medway Campus, said: "We wanted to write something that was modern and didn't want to do something that was similar to what is already out there.

"Dennis wrote the music first of all and then we discussed what sort of words could match the tune, eventually deciding we wanted to have the tradition of Christmas but also bring it up-to-date.

"So we came up with the idea of Santa having eaten and drunk too much and becoming stuck in the chimney because he has put on weight.

"But we kept it in touch with modern technology in that he has a mobile phone, but can't contact his reindeer because there's no wi-fi.

"We've spoken to a lot of people and they've told us it's time for a new Christmas song - I think we've managed to find that balance between being both traditional and modern."

However, creating a new classic that stands the test of time has proved a tough nut to crack for artists since the turn of the century.

Furthermore in 2009, Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name unexpectedly took the festive top spot after a huge public protest against The X Factor's recent dominance of the charts.

"This isn't anything like that, we just think there needs to be a new Christmas number one," Dr Plummer added.

The track can be heard by watching the video above or can be streamed on sites like Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, Reverbnation, Google and Amazon.
