The fire broke out in a bunker at Allington Energy from Waste - a waste management facility used by Kent County Council, which sees waste turned into electricity.

Members of staff were seen standing outside at the site last night. Fire crews remained at the scene for more than 10 hours - not leaving until just before 2am.

A Kent County Council spokesman said: "There is no impact to services for Kent County Council as the Allington plant is undergoing maintenance and our waste is being diverted to other outlets for the next two weeks."

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the fire is believed to have started accidentally.
