Flood warning along River Medway in Maidstone

A flood warning has been issued for land next to the River Medway, Beult and Stour.

The riverbanks from Hampstead Lock at Yalding to Allington Lock, Maidstone are at particular risk.

The Environment Agency says river levels have risen as a result of excess rainfall overnight.

As a result flooding for low lying land and footpaths along the Medway is likely.

Other areas likely to be affected include East Farleigh, Wateringbury, Teston and Teston Park, Tovil and Maidstone's Millennium Park.

The river flows through Tonbridge, Maidstone and the Medway Towns.

The River Beult from Pluckley and Bethersden to Hampstead Lock at Yalding, including Smarden, Headcorn, Collier Street, Benover and The Lees is also at risk.

Flooding is also possible for communities near Great Stour from Charing Heath to the A2070 including Ashford, on the East Stour, on the Whitewater and Ruckinge Dykes and the Aylesford Stream.

Flooding is not forecast for properties at this stage but the government agency says it will continue to review the situation throughout the day.

Meanwhile flood alerts have been put in place in other parts of the county.

In Ashford the Rother catchment was hit hard by rainfall overnight, particularly between Crowhurst Bridge and Etchingham.

A flood alert is in now in place with "unsettled conditions" expected for the rest of the week.
