Deal means old bank in Maidstone's High Street will become a pub

A historic building in the heart of Maidstone could be brought back into use and turned into a bustling traditional pub.

The former NatWest bank - and before that the Kentish Bank - overlooking Jubilee Square has been empty for around a year.
A deal has been struck to buy the lease by the same management which owns Strawberry Moons and Road House in Gabriels Hill, the Wilson family.

The plan is to restore the beautiful building, which includes a stunning huge glass ceiling dome, with its solid oak colums and panelling.

Opening as a traditional British free-house, the new owners aim to provide drinks including beers, wines, spirits, seasonal and guest real ales, and an affordable menu, opening between 10am and 11pm.

Town centre manager Bill Moss told members of the nightime economy forum on Tuesday: “It is the most fantastic building and this will be a welcome addition to the town.”

It is hoped the new venue will open in the autumn.
