Monster moth makes a midnight visit to Marden

You never know what might pay you a late-night surprise visit when you are trying to get to sleep and your windows are wide open.

Nick Harper encountered an elephant at his home in Marden.

Well, an elephant moth, to be precise.

The creature is believed to be similar to the elephant hawk moth, which tends to have a pinker colour.

Nick said: " I always like to notice the wildlife and try to keep my mobile phone on me as I always find something interesting."

But at 3am last night he was in for a big shock.

He said: "At first I thought it was a massive hornet, a May Bug or a small bat. But it turned out to be an elephant moth I let in."

He added: "It wasn't one of the colourful ones you normally find in the UK. This one looked like a hornet.

"I took some photos of it then played a prank on my friend and then let it go on its merry way."

But the sighting wasn't the only recent one in Kent.

Mandy Jenner sent the picture above, describing it as a "very large moth sitting on my smoke alarm in my house in sturry near Canterbury."
