Large fire breaks out close to Detling Hill on the A249

A pall of smoke could be seen from several miles after a skip on a lorry caught fire near Detling Hill.

The burning skip was being transported on the back of the lorry when the content caught fire near the A249, but firefighters said the vehicle is not on the road, having rolled 30 metres down the bank.

Crews were called to the blaze just before 5pm and used compressed air foam to put out the flames.

It is not known if anyone was hurt.

The A249 remained open throughout.
