Maidstone mum says son, 13, left traumatised after hit-and-run in Loddington Lane, Linton

A “cheeky” and “outgoing” 13-year-old boy has been left “mentally traumatised” after being hurt in a suspected hit-and-run.

A car collided with Tommy Wickenden when he was out with a friend in Loddington Lane, Linton, near Maidstone.

It has left the teenager afraid to go out, having nightmares and suffering panic attacks when he sees vehicles pass by, says his mum.

The incident happened on the evening of Thursday, June 5, when the pair were on their way back home from riding on his friend’s e-scooter in a nearby field, which they had permission from the landowner to use (although it’s illegal to use them in a public street).

CCTV footage showed a white Ford Focus near the scene of the crash, off Butt Green Lane, shortly before 7pm.

It is believed to have been driven by a young woman, and other passengers had been in the vehicle at the time.

Tommy’s mum Charlotte Hillier said: “The driver came around the corner, collided with them, hitting Tommy from the side of the car, and he rolled over it.

“He started crying and was bleeding from his chin and mouth, and she stopped the car and got out.

“One of the passengers got out and asked if he was okay, to which he said, ‘No, I’m really hurt’, and the driver said ‘Oh my god’, then got back in the car and drove off.”

Tommy and his friend returned to his home just metres away, and both the police and ambulance service were called.

Charlotte said: “He came to the door and could barely speak, but said ‘someone has hit me with their car and run’.

“As a mum, it broke my heart - I just thought, how can anyone do that and then just drive off, leaving two little kids in the road hurt?”

A spokesperson for the police confirmed they attended the scene at around 7.25pm where it is reported the car stopped momentarily before leaving the scene prior to the attendance of officers.

Tommy had to be blue-lighted to Pembury hospital in the aftermath, where 17 X-rays were carried out.

He had suffered a locked jaw, a potentially broken nose, severely bruised hips and chin wounds which had to be glued.

Charlotte says the impact the incident has had on her once “outgoing” and “cheeky little boy” has “destroyed a part of him”.

She added: “He is mentally traumatised – it’s like it’s taken a bit of his life away.

“He won’t go out at the moment, he won’t go back to school.

“Every white car he sees, he has panic attacks.”

Tommy has also been suffering nightmares recounting moments from the accident.

Charlotte said: “His friends asked him the other day if he wanted to go out, and he said no, he told me, 'What if she comes back?’.

“As a mum, it breaks your heart seeing your child so hurt.”

Police have confirmed no arrests have been made and enquiries to identify the driver of the car are ongoing.
