Jackknifed lorry blocks M20 coastbound between Junction 8 (Leeds Castle / Maidstone Services) and Junction 9 (Ashford) after hitting a bridge

A stretch of the M20 closed after a lorry jackknifed and blocked the carriageway.

The HGV also hit a bridge over the coastbound carriageway between Junction 8 (Leeds Castle / Maidstone Services) and Junction 9 (Ashford) at around 2.30am.

Kent Police and National Highways Traffic Officers attended the scene and traffic trapped behind the accident has been released.

The police said no injuries were reported.

In an update on X at 11am, National Highways said the stretch of the M20 had now fully reopened. It said: “Thank you for your patience.”

A diversion route had been set up for anyone travelling coastbound with drivers advised to follow the hollow circle symbol on road signs.

The police said: “Officers were called at 2.16am on Monday, January 13, to a jack-knifed lorry that was causing an obstruction on the M20 between junctions 8 and 9.

“Patrols and highways officers attended the scene where the carriageway was closed while the vehicle was recovered. No injuries were reported.”
