Jams as lorry overturns

DRIVERS are being urged to avoid using Royal Engineers’ Road in Maidstone this morning, after a lorry overturned and blocked part of the carriageway.

Police were called to Staceys Street at 6.37am, where a lorry was on its side and had spilled its cargo of 30 crushed cars.

The male driver was suffering from chest and shoulder injuries and was taken to Maidstone Hospital.

As a result of the accident, police had to close Staceys Street completely and drivers had to make their own way around the crash.

By 8.30am, officers at the scene were awaiting the arrival of a recovery lorry and traffic was at a virtual standstill in surrounding roads.

PC Alex Bridges, from Maidstone and Malling Police, said: “We’d ask drivers to avoid the Royal Engineers’ Road at this time because traffic is becoming quite heavy in that area.”
