The driver of the car was taken a London hospital by air ambulance in a serious condition and road closures remain in place.

A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "We were called at approximately 9.40am today to reports of an RTC involving a vehicle and a lorry on Linton Road (A229) at Loose.

"Ambulance crews attended and were joined at the scene by the air ambulance service.

"One person was assessed and treated at the scene before being airlifted to Kings College Hospital in a serious condition."

The fire service also attended.

'It's caused chaos...'

One driver stuck in the traffic said: "It's been standstill for about 20 minutes and people have had to turn round in the road and try another route.

"But now the back roads are becoming tricky to get through as everyone is trying to squeeze past each other. It's caused chaos."

The road was reopened in both directions at 3pm.
