Suspect accused of spitting on nurse and stealing from Marks and Spencer in Week Street, Maidstone appears in court

A suspected thief accused of spitting on a nurse and threatening emergency workers in Maidstone has appeared in court.

Just after 8pm on Monday, June 14, a man went to Marks and Spencer in Week Street where it is reported he stole clothing.

Two days later, a suspect was detained in the High Street in connection with the incident.

While in custody, a police patrol took him to hospital for medical attention where it is alleged he spat on a nurse and made threats towards her.

He is also said to have verbally abused officers who were present.

John Devall, of London Road, Maidstone, was later charged with theft, assaulting an emergency worker and two public order offences.

On Saturday, June 19, Mr Devall, aged 37, appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court where he was released on conditional bail to attend Maidstone Magistrates' Court on July 19.
